Build Yourself Above Yourself- Pathway to Success

Build Yourself Above Yourself- Pathway to Success

Believe in yourself Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy.” – Norman Vincent Peale

During your career, opportunities come once a while and one should grab them. Those who hesitate and keep doing deeper analysis are like those standing on the bank of river and waiting while those who are bold they jump, swim across the river and go far to explore further. If you have required knowledge/skills, self confidence and adequate resources, you must go ahead and take a calculated risk.

It is well established that some decision is better than no decision. Once the decision is taken, do not waiver and make it happen resolutely. Always own your team and showcase them as highly competent and well-knit when discussing with customers or senior management. It is your professional integrity to train your team well, judiciously deploy them as per their competence, get the best out of them. You must act as a good buffer when it comes to welfare and career development of your team. Remember your support of team members is more important for

your success and growth than review by seniors. Your loyalty must take first priority toward organization and next towards team members. Some salient points which can help you in achieving success in your chosen job are briefly given below :

  • Basics and Fundamentals. To succeed in any job, be it engineering, design, journalism, practising law, playing music, dancing or marketing, basics about your job must be clear and practised to achieve excellence/success. The clarity in the basics of any skill helps in creative thinking and evolving innovative solutions. Many otherwise complex problems when broken down into easily doable parts can have an effective and efficient solution. Your sound basics will draw appreciation from teammates as well as from seniors and make easier for you to climb up the corporate ladder.

  • Background Records. Do your best anywhere you serve and keep a good record of your service. When you apply elsewhere for a new job, they will confidentially carry out the background check. In the case of an adverse remark, the job will not be offered to you.

  • Balance between Job and Family. You are required to maintain a judicious balance between job and family. Likewise, you are to maintain a balance between body and mind. While going through a difficult stage of project implementation, you may stretch teammates but not break them.

  • Bargaining Art. You may bargain to get the best offer at the time of your recruitment but once you take up the job, you must put in your very best. However, you must be good at bargaining while dealing with business partners, customers and vendors/sub-contractors.

USA’s late President John F. Kennedy – “Don’t ask what country can give you, ask what you have given to the country.”

  • This applies to all of us and we should not keep harping about our rights and entitlements. It is more important that we do our duties to the fullest. Once you are aligned with the strategic goals of the organization, there should be no bargaining.

  • Barriers. During your career, there will be obstacles/barriers and you are to be determined to make your way and reach the goal. At times, you may not confront head-on and rather make a detour and find via media to circumvent the barriers

  • Begin Early and Grow Fast. The good old saying “Well begun is half done” is ever true. Do not hesitate and wait for a comprehensive plan, rather quickly pick up any idea and take off. As you begin, more options will emerge and keep taking right action as you progress. Those who get stuck in analysis and super planning stage will get late to respond and those who take off quickly will be the winners. You always begin small like building brick by brick and the wall will be raised, word by word and book will be written, walk step by step and journey will be covered.

  • Behaviour. Your behaviour in any public place, workplace and even at home has to be good as you are being seen by others. No one likes a misbehaved person. If you are nice to others they will reciprocate willingly and work environment will improve. Be particularly kind and well behaved when dealing with the opposite gender. In global/ multinational team, you should be very careful of culture, customs and traditions of others since some people are quite sensitive. Women are generally particular about their privacy, modesty and men must be very careful in their behaviour toward fellow women/girls.

  • Belief. A belief is a trust in self and others. If you believe your doctor, the medicine will show a better effect on you. Have full belief in your capabilities and move on with full determination. You can accomplish anything if you believe that you can do it. Have full belief in seniors, peers and juniors and collective effort will take you toward success.

  • Belongingness. A sense of belonging to the organization you serve is very important. Likewise, as a manager/team leader you must prove to the team that they belong to you and you are looking after them. In return, they will give their best for your success.

  • Benchmark. To achieve global standards, your product/service should be benchmarked against similar products of the internationally known organization. This standardization provides you with better visibility and acceptability in the market and opens new doors to your success.

  • Best performance. In any task you undertake or any relationship you may develop, always do your best at every stage and at every place you are located. Do not worry about the immediate return. Your boss, your peers will notice your best efforts and appreciate/award you. During any selection process, an employer will pick up the best and leave the rest.

  • Boss Management. You do not bring your previous boss with you when you join any new organization. Your new boss is already well established and is rightfully controlling, directing and enabling his/her team. As you are new entrant, you need to mould yourself in the ethos of the organization and support your boss to get his/her support. Any confrontation with the boss is bad for the work environment and the team.

  • Brainstorming and Brain-Sketching. To evolve any new product/ service you may call for a meeting of senior/experienced members and conduct a brainstorming session. Allow people freewheeling and pick up workable ideas. Thereafter go for a technical session (Brain – sketching) to finalize and optimize the design for implementation.

  • Build Good Relationships. At your workplace and at home, there may be a number of obstacles or misunderstandings and you must be ready to build bridges of trust to overcome any gap. Do build good social/media networks with enduring relationships.

  • Budget Control. As a manager/team leader, you are required to keep reviewing progress made and amount spent. Keep effective control to develop and deliver the product/services well in time and within the allotted budget.
