1.
Introduction.
Today, we are living in the 21st
century with global uncertainty and fast-developing Technologies like AI,
Machine Learning (ML), Virtual Reality (VR), Cloud Computing, Robotics, Drones,
Surveillance, and Guided Systems. Using these advancements, developed and
developing nations are rapidly becoming Digital economies and Knowledge
societies. There is also ever-growing mistrust within and outside the
countries, chaos, and confusion in national policies. There are many cases of
youth unrest from within/supported by foreign adversaries. In addition, global
warming continues causing calamities like unprecedented rains, floods,
landslides, tsunamis, and hurricanes. There is also an ongoing war between
Russia and Ukraine, Israel and Hamas /Palestine in Gaza.
There is a trade war and visa
restriction among certain countries, impacting global job opportunities and
exports. By December 2025, the USA has stopped issuing entry visas to more than 20
countries, mostly from Africa, Asia, and South America. Consequently,
students seeking higher education and job opportunities are drifting towards
China, Singapore and Australia. Such, turbulent environment is causing
disruptions in business alliances, slowdown in industry and
right-sizing/downsizing of manpower. This situation is further compounded by
sponsored/outsourced terrorism and violence, perpetrated by fundamentalists
like ISIS, Jihadist Taliban groups, and sea pirates across the world.
While rapid advances in
technologies have provided means to explore beyond our own country and improve
our productivity, longevity, the speed of travel, decision making, and
lifestyle, it has been causing disruptions and displacements of jobs. However,
new technologies also create new jobs, which of course require new skills, more
multitasking, and efficient use of resources. This scenario demands fast
learning and adapting to newer skill sets, creativity, innovation and enduring
alliances.
2.
Job Environment.
2.1.
The old job concept was joining an organization and carrying on till retirement
and availing a pension. This concept is no longer valid today. Now, instead of
recruiting, training, deploying/employing, providing job stability, and drawing
loyalty toward the employer, many employers resort to project-based hiring and
firing policies. Therefore, one has to be alert and look out for opportunities
to switch jobs at an appropriate time. Today, one has to actively manage one’s
career and judiciously change companies for better growth, learning new skills,
raising visibility, and getting a higher pay package.
2.2 Today, an employer is looking
for a highly educated and technology-savvy professional who is multi-skilled
for undertaking multitasking and producing good results without any
supervision. Likewise, an employee is looking for a good pay package, a
healthy work environment, and career growth opportunities. For this
matchmaking, each one of us is going through the process of getting
industry-oriented professional education, acquiring new skills and working hard
to have stability and growth in our careers.
3.
Emerging Global Scenario,
The world around us is highly
interconnected, interdependent, and uncertain, where market- reaches are global
and operating on 24x7 hours. Geographical boundaries of countries have disappeared
and time zones have become an advantage for global business. Indeed, we are
coexisting and cooperating in one global village, which is complex, demanding,
dynamic, speedy and full of challenges. Since the beginning of this century,
there have been numerous conflicts, disturbances, political unrests, revolts,
and violence in many countries across the globe and this trend continues.
3.1 Ongoing Wars.
There is an ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, Israel and Hamas /
Palestine, and Iran and Israel. Likewise, certain countries in Latin America,
South Asia, Africa, and the Middle East are the cause of global uncertainty.
3,2 Trade War.
With the ongoing trade war and visa restrictions triggered by the USA in early 2025,
there may be new alignments to mitigate this impact. Thus, we are operating in
a complex world, full of turmoil, where the only thing that is certain is
uncertainty. All such events are resulting in a stressful working environment
and uncertainty of jobs and business alliances. The education systems are
finding it very hard to keep pace with the emerging market demand of young
professionals, who should be multi-skilled, highly productive, and billable
from day one.
3,3 Industry Revolution 4.1. The technology revolution
(Industry Revolution (IR 4.1) is moving much faster than predicted by Moore.
The Automation of office work, Manufacturing, Process control industries,
Material handling in plants, Warehouses, and Construction sites continues to
take away many jobs. Likewise, Robotics, 3-D printing, Drones, Microprocessors,
Cloud Computing, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR), Machine
Learning (ML), Internet of Things (IoT), and Embedded software technology
continue to further impact areas like medical diagnostics and surgical operations,
improving productivity, accuracy and scope of analysis and interpretation.
Digital Marketing, Mobile communication, Video conferencing, Smartphone, Social
Media, Prefab construction technology, and Bulk Rapid Transportation (BRT)
system are disrupting many jobs. These are impacting our health, lifestyle,
relationships/alliances, business environment, as well as career growth.
Technology cuts both ways; disruption of human-intensive jobs and creating
smarter jobs, but needing new skills.
4. The survival kit.
4,1. Educational Focus.
Career survival kit in this uncertain global environment is that one must be
quick in learning new skills, early adopter of technologies, be competent,
reliable, and efficient. There is an urgent need to shift our educational focus
from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) to DICE
(Design-Thinking, Innovation, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship).
4, 2 Continuous Learning. In today’s world, there is
great competition and high uncertainty. Employers/organizations seek value for
money and employees expect a good pay package to have career growth and
stability. For this, one must equip oneself with appropriate academic
qualifications, skill sets, a positive attitude, listening to others, honouring
commitment, and determination to meet the expectations of those who matter.
Likewise, entrepreneurs and small business people need multi-skilling,
multi-tasking, collaborating and building new networks and alliances. As an
employee, one is required to make a commitment, declare ones Key Result Areas
(KRAs) and carry out self-audit as how one is moving ahead to fulfill one’s
commitment. Some organizations are using SAP “Success Factor” software tools to
assess the performance of their employees while carrying out the annual
appraisal. Hence, our growth and stability in our careers are linked to our
commitment and performance.
